Gardens

The botanical and architectural complex orchestrated by Burle Marx is permeated by a series of gardens and lakes that show the processes of analysis, cultivation and experimentation that led to the creation of modern tropical landscaping. To the native vegetation of the site’s terrain, Burle Marx added countless species collected on his expeditions throughout Brazil, acclimatising them, applying their volumes, colours and textures to arrangements organised according to scientific knowledge and modern aesthetic principles, inspired by a broad cultural and artistic background. The various lakes spread throughout the site were created by him with the main purpose of housing his collection of aquatic species. As with the other elements of the gardens, they were conceived of as an integral part of the landscape, bringing together different groups of plants in visually striking and aesthetically harmonious compositions. They also act as reflective poetic surfaces of light, sky and vegetation.
